Physics 2C 2000 Winter 2001: Lecture Notes
Each week, scanned viewgraphs will be posted here in Adobe Acrobat format. Note that
these lecture notes can only be
posted after the lecture has been given, and dependent on the TA's
schedule.
Therefore please use them as a convenient service, but do not rely on them
as your only resource!
These PDF files are large (few MB) and may take some time to download; we
are working on reducing their size without compromising quality.

Week 2:
Week 3:
Molecular
Gas Model Applet
Week 4:
The Entropy Links
Page - links to descriptions and animations. Check out the "Happy
Molecules" animation in particular.
Week 5:
Week 6:
- Lecture 15 - Sound waves:
pressure/displacement, interference, Intensity
- Lecture 16 - Beats
- Lecture 17 - Doppler effect, supersonic
shocks.
Doppler effect
Java applet - set the speed of the source.
Doppler effect
cartoon - a whimsical example.
Mach
cone produced by a Navy F-16. (1.5 Mbyte MPEG movie). The F-16 breaks
the sound barrier before it gets to the ship, then it slows down a bit and
breaks the sound barrier a second time right near the ship. This second
time, you can see the shock form at the nose of the plane, then "slide
back" to the tail. The mach cone has such a big opening angle, because the
plane is traveling only slightly faster than the sound speed.
Week 7:
- Lecture 18 - EM waves, energy transport,
polarization.
- Lecture 19 - Polarization in nature,
reflection, refraction, Snell's law, total internal reflection.
