During my PhD work, after a serendipitous observation of Solar Gamma-rays, I became curious about the existence and possible detection of X-rays and Gamma-rays from extra-terrestrial sources. Upon arriving at UCSD from Minnesota in 1962, I developed a program with instruments flown on balloons and spacecraft to observe Solar and Cosmic X-rays and low-energy Gamma-rays. These observations provide information on Astrophysical processes occurring in regions of the Universe with multi-million degree temperatures, or populated by relativistic particles, or associated with compact objects.
