The Astronaut Lung Function Experiment (ALFE)
The Astronaut Lung Function Experiment (ALFE) was a project of Dr. West of the UCSD Medical Center to study lung function in zero g. After being selected to have his experiment placed aboard the Space Shuttle, he approached the High Energy Astrophysics Group to assist him in developing space qualified (and astronaut qualified) equipment. The engineers and programmers of the group developed ALFE along with Dr. West’s science team. For more information, visit the ALFE web site.
