The Moon is the only other body in the Universe that has been visited by human beings. Despite it's reputation as a dead rock, the Moon still holds several secrets, including the fairly recent discovery of the existence of water ice. On October 9th, 2009 a probe from the Lunar CRater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) impacted the Southern polar region of the Moon. The goal of the experiment was to look for water beneath the Moon's surface by dredging up material during the impact event. A large ground-based observing effort, which I was a part of, was organized to watch the impact.
