UCSD Department of Physics, Winter 2001

Course WWW page: http://mamacass.ucsd.edu/people/pblanco/physics2c/index.html

Overview:

This is a continuation of Physics 2B covering: fluid mechanics, the kinetic theory of gases, temperature, heat, the laws of thermodynamics, mechanical waves, electromagnetic waves, geometric optics, interference and diffraction.

Prerequisites: Physics 2B, Mathematics 21C, and concurrent enrollment in Mathematics 21D.

News:

Feb 22: Homework solutions and lecture notes for week 7 have been posted. Complete quiz scores for week 6 are not yet available.

WWW Problems: Some students are having trouble getting their browsers to read the latest version of these pages. For now, if you suspect this is happening, try hitting SHIFT+Reload in your browser window to force an update. I am looking into other solutions to this problem.

    Testing and Grading Policy

    Homework:
Homework assignments will be given each week but will not count towards the final grade. They should be done concurrently with lectures and be completed before the Problem Solving sessions. In general, if you do not at least attempt the homeworks, you will be at a severe disadvantage in the quizzes, and in the final exam!

    Quizzes (65%):
Quizzes will consist of a few short questions based on the week's assignment. All quizzes are ``closed book'', which means absolutely no recorded information may be brought in from the outside.

Note that to save printing costs, you are required to complete quiz questions in a UCSD Blue Answer Book (available from the bookstore), which you must bring with you to each quiz. Please use a new, empty answer book for each quiz. You will be assigned a 3-digit code number on the first quiz, which is to be entered on your answer book. Do not lose this number! Solutions and (if possible) grades by code number will be posted on the WWW.

There will be no make-ups for missed quizzes; instead, the best 5 quizzes out of the 7 or 8 given will count towards 65% of your final grade.

    Final Exam (35%): Tuesday March 20, 2001, 11:30am-2:30pm
The final exam will cover all of the material in the lecture series. This will also be ``closed book'', but the more complex formulae will be provided as an aide memoire.

Please check your exam schedule and inform the instructor of any conflicts within the first two weeks of the class. Conflicts with other final exams are usually resolved by the Physics Student Affairs office, so inform them also if this is the case. The Final Exam will count as 35% of the final grade.

Academic Dishonesty: your fast ticket to an "F" grade.
Please read the ``UC Policy on Integrity of Scholarship'' on pages 71-74 of the 2000-2001 UCSD General Catalog. These rules will be strictly enforced.
