The World Wide Web

The World Wide Web consists of a number of computers located in varous places around the world, interlinked by a computer network (the Internet).

some of the information contained on these machines is publicly available
much of the information is free (but may be copyrighted)
most people regard the copyright as affecting publication for money
much (more every day) of the information is advertis ing

Various organizations/groups use this network to distribute information only within the organization/group. This information is private. In this case the network is called the Intranet.

The Intranet and the Internet may or may not use the same computer network. It is the public availability of the information which determines what the network is called.
